The Fireplace

When we are gathered around a fire we tend to open up. We share stories and memories. The fireplace is mesmerizing and we find ourselves in a situation where we are actually listening.

We keep it alive with more logs and twigs, we use it for cooking, we enjoy the warmth and light and it becomes a mutual point of interest.
The light intensity is regulated by a wooden iris, simply turn the aluminum wheel and watch it open and close. The pine wood surface has natural ridges, inviting the audience to touch and feel the structure of the material. The warm light of the luminaire is passing through thin ash wood veneer to mimic the character of the glow from the camp fire embers.

When gathered around the campfire people tend to open up and share stories, thoughts and emotions more than in other social situations. Many of us have beautiful memories from being together with friends and family around a campfire waiting for the night. In this project I try to embody some of the many elements of the campfire. I believe it is not only the light from the fire itself that makes us open up, the fire is mesmerizing and we disconnect from the outside world and and connects to a different presence.

The interaction point where the light intensity is controlled is inspired by the aperture used in camera lenses, but a few times larger and made of wood instead of metal. You simply turn the aluminum dial around the iris to open and close the aperture. The character of the wood is emphasized by the passing light of the LED inside of the structure..

Experiments with LED's and wood veneer. The light from the LED passes through the 0,6mm thick wood and lights up the fibers.
